Cook time: 20 minutes

Wait time: 35 minutes

Course: Dinner/main course

Cuisine: Chinese

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

For the Wontons

  • ½ pound ground pork (alternatively use chicken, shrimp or turkey)
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp. oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp. sesame oil
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 4 finely chopped green onion
  • ¼ tsp. ground white pepper
  • A package of wonton wrappers

For the soup

  • 4 cups of chicken soup ( you can also use vegetable soup)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. freshly grated ginger
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 medium carrots thinly sliced lengthwise
  • ¼ cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped baby spinach
  • 12 large shrimp ready to cook
  • ¼ cup chopped green onions for garnish
  • Some sesame oil for serving (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the wonton filling

  1. Combine your chosen ground meat (pork/chicken/turkey) in a mixing bowl. I use pork for this recipe.
  2. Combine the meat, soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic, green onion, sesame oil, and white pepper thoroughly.

Step 2: Assemble the wontons

  1. Place the wonton wrappers on a flat and clean surface.
  2. Add a teaspoon of the filling in each wrapper, wet the edges with water, fold over, and tightly press the edges to seal the wontons.

Step 3: Prepare the soup

  1. Boil the chicken broth in pot (or the vegetable soup if it’s your preference)
  2. Once the broth boils, adjust the heat to medium; add the grated ginger and garlic to infuse the broth with flavor, then stir in the soy sauce. Add the chopped celery together with the carrots and cook for 2 minutes.

Step 4: Cook the wontons

  1. Carefully drop the wontons into the broth one at a time and simmer for 5 minutes or until they all float because cooking time can vary with the thickness of your wrappers.

Step 5: Add the broccoli, bok choy shrimp and finish the cooking

  • Add broccoli and bok choy and cook for 4 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook for an extra 4 minutes.
  • Adjust to low heat, add the spinach, and cook for 2 minutes until tender.

Serve and enjoy

  • Ladle the ready-won wonton soup in bowls and serve to your liking. You can garnish with green onions and sesame oil for an extra rich nutty flavor.
